Standing towards the northwest is 8180-foot Mt. Look towards the north, on your right, for some outstanding views of the Garden Wall (see photo above). Once the snow melts, however, the Hanging Gardens becomes an incredibly beautiful carpet of wildflowers.Īs you proceed upwards during the early portions of the hike, 8760-foot Clements Mountain will dominate the view directly in front of you (see photo on right). ![]() The boardwalk helps to keep hikers above the snow, slush, mud and rivulets. At this elevation snow tends to linger around well into the summer. The trail begins as a paved surface, but soon turns into a raised boardwalk after only a short distance. You'll also have the option of using the park's shuttle system throughout the day. If you wish to avoid the crowds I highly recommend starting your hike as early in the morning as possible. As a result, parking is usually an issue during peak tourist season. You should also expect extreme crowds, as the Hidden Lake Overlook area is one of the most popular destinations in Glacier National Park. At this lofty elevation visitors should normally expect a lot of sun and wind. The entire length of this trail is completely open and exposed as you proceed through the alpine meadows known as the Hanging Gardens. ![]() The trail is more commonly referred to as the Hidden Lake Nature Trail. Once on the back side of the visitor center, after climbing the stairway, stay towards the right and look for the Hanging Gardens Trailhead. The hike to Hidden Lake in Glacier National Park begins from the west side of the Logan Pass Visitor Center. Most visitors head back from this overlook, but the trail does continue downward for an additional 1.2 miles to the north side of Hidden Lake. From here, there is also a great view into Sperry Glacier basin. After 1.4 miles, Hidden Lake becomes visible down below at overlook with an interpretive sign. It helps to have a hiking pole or walking stick to be able to navigate the step height.įrom here, the trail continues on dirt, climbing over Hidden Pass where you can often spot mountain goats. They aren't difficult in and of themselves, but were not built at a height to be a simple step for someone shorter than 64 inches. Note that the boardwalk is a series of many steps. The boardwalk heads up turning into stairs that lead toward the glacial moraine that was formed by the glacier that used to sit at the bottom of Clements Mountain. To start this hike, head out on the Hidden Lake Trail past the visitor center that starts as asphalt and quickly turns into a raised boardwalk. ![]()
